You'd have to have an on/off of some kind on at least one tank or you'd have a hard time trying to turn both tanks onto the gun at the same time

Chaos knows these guns pretty well.
They're big, loud, heavy. They're made of heavy machine-grade 6061 aluminum and 316 stainless in most places, so they last a long time and can be used as hammers, jacks, or pilings for small buildings.

While parts aren't as available as they used to be, they also aren't needed super often. O-rings are common and can be ordered through plumbing suppliers (cheap rubber) or decent hardware supply (teflon or other long-lived items). The cup seal can be substituted with an autococker item in a pinch.

The hard to find items are the seal on the front of the hammer (doesn't go bad often, though) and sear parts (if the sear is worn out or trigger assembly is bad, you've got a problem for a VM-68 guru--they're fiddley the first time and you WON'T get it right without help...if you can find the parts...). Detents ("magic fingers") are $20 from Palmer's or can be cut from gasket material.

These have hit their low value point, so they won't be worth any less if you try one and don't like it. Look for one in good condition, the $35 specials are often too rough to consider, but you don't need to wait for a $200 NIB special either. They're common and a $60 tiger-stripe in playable shape will come your way if you look.

And there's more than a few of us who can give you advice...these may be old, but they aren't forgotten. Heck, I was using one just a couple weeks ago.

Ben

As for the tanks on a VM--under the barrel has to be a skinny one, like a 9oz. Most 12oz tanks are fat enough that the tank will hit the barrel and 20oz is right out.

If you run multiple tanks: whenever a "pin-valve" tank is screwed all the way in it will be "on" and start venting out the other ASA(s). You can (and I have!) try to screw the tanks in at the same time to minimize this; you lose some and risk blowing o-rings but it is possible. Easier to have an on-off tank for this, or an on-off ASA, check valve, or other way to keep from venting all your CO2 every time you play musical tanks.

Lastly...if you're not in a hurry...in 3-4 weeks I'm going to be putting together some of my parts VMs and probably putting a couplle on the market. I could be interested in trades if you're still looking.

Yeah I'd be looking, let me know when that is. Also I heard they get better efficiency with an expantion chamber, so could you put an empty tank on the front and a full one in the back to act as an expantion chamber?

Only problem I see using an empty tank for expansion is you'd lose some efficency due to it being more of a dump chamber than an X-chamber,X-Chambers have separate chambers inside allowing for gradual expansion instead of instant expansion

Actually I just picked one up from PPS-they're ~$9.50.

Everybody that talks about VM's weight and 'massive kick' hasn't fired a BE Golden Eagle.
