That sounds more like an acute manufacturing defect. Those back o-rings are what makes efficiency possible on that design. If they are Chinese o-rings, that could be the entire problem. Those guys know how to mess up an o-ring. Find a pair of fresh, firm ones and try it out. The design is sound, mainly by being mechanically simple and well balanced. You could try to burnish that hole as well.
