I will probably be wearing it for 8 hours at a time max.

I shall look into those Obake, they look comfortable enough.

I'm not too worried about knee padding as much as reducing the strain on my knees from normal movement on the field. My pants have plenty of knee padding and if needed I can use the empire knee/shin pads I have layen around.
I'm no doc but x-rays don't show tendons and muscle tissue. Knees are all about the tissues and connecting bits. So the doc probably saw that yup... you still got knees.

I suggest talking to a sports therapist or even a running shoe store expert.
I had some issues with knees and shins which was primarily a cause from poor shoe support. Got better shoes... and my world changed.

Dunno what your physical condition is, but there are also exercises to strengthen joints and stuff. I had good success talking with sports therapists.

I ride my bike, squats, do stretches and have training from running shoe experts (I use to sell the shoes for several years back in the day) and I am in decent shape. I can run a mile still without keeling over but my knee starts nagging me.

Still, maybe ya'lls be right and I need to see a sports therapist. Maybe I will have time next year to do that or something.

Hmm... maybe go see a good doctor about testing for Lyme's disease. I was also treated for this. Constant joint pain despite tons of treatment was an indicator for me to run a treatment. It's a strong antibiotic for 3 months.

I know I don't have Lyme's disease, I would have found that out already

Lucky duck!

Without padding, kneeling on the knee that has been cut open twice feels like a bolt of lightning shooting up from the ground into my guts.

Go to an orthopedic specialist/surgeon. He’ll check out your motion/pain, order an MRI and go from there. He’ll probably send you to a physical therapist.

From what I understand, the soft braces don’t really do anything except make you feel better about having something on your knee. They don’t really provide meaningful additional support. I have a super expensive custom brace and an off the shelf brace with the hard hinges. I only wear a brace for snowboarding. The idea should be to strengthen your knee enough to not have to wear them.

I have been using a J-brace for about 5 years and it seems to work for me. Keep in mind I dont run..... Ever! I'll second the opinion of no better feeling than when youtake it off at the end of the day and feel the air flow.

So - I don't want to go full medical librarian but do a search for "patellar support ring" and "anterior knee pain."

Soft braces like the one I linked to that have a patellar support ring/patella stabilizer actually can play a role in the prevention of anterior knee pain.

The orthopedic surgeon that performed my surgeries also originally suggested the brace I linked to if I "insist on continuing to run around in the woods."

You are right about them not providing any real support though - as they do not restrict the motion of the knee and the soft brace won't prevent you from locking or hyperextending your knee.

For pain the soft brace is great, not so much if you need to restrict the movement of your knee though.

You'd need an MRI to get a look at soft tissue damage. Honestly, I think docs often give people xrays as a sort of placebo to pacify some people. They attempted similar with me in regards to my shoulder.

I told the docs they were idiots and I needed an MRI (this was the Army). Took me almost 18 months to get the MRI and low and behold, clear damage. Two surgeries and years of physical therapy as a result. Fun times.
