Bit behind on this (ruling came out last week) but it's very interesting. As a staunch libertarian, this has is both exciting and a little terrifying.
Also, the way they turned it into a 1st amendment issue is pretty funny. The fact that they won using that argument is hilariously absurd.

not that i have the skills or inclination but you could probably "design" a computer virus that would wreak havoc across the world and as long as you didn't "use" it, that "design" would fall under free speech and be protected.
i didn't make the rules but i do try and follow the rules...

Its perfectly legal to make your own firearm for personal use, without needing to register, or have an FLL. Likewise, its perfectly legal to 3d print your own gun (with certain limitations, etc).
Its also perfectly legal to distribute plans and instructions to make your own firearms.
When these 3d plans were released, the government blocked his 1st amendments rights, on the grounds that it was too easily accessible by foreign governments.
His argument was that the reason that the government used was not strong enough to violate his 1st ammendment rights. ie If the "Anarchist Cookbook" can exist, then they can't block 3d printed firearm plans.
