Yeah, I agree that it's easier to modify a 68-special to accept stripper clips.

But as far as reviving SMG-68s...what I'm talking about is an adapter cut from billet steel, so you don't have to worry about fitting tubing to the SMG-68 breech. You'd cut the adapter to the proper size and profile, then add the pawl and various holes to it. The actual magazine would be completely separate, either welded or bolted on.

For HPA, isn't the restriction there the internal lines? Not sure what they're rated to, but I guess CO2 can easily hit 1K+ psi.

You would also need to replace the valve. SMG's and 68 Special valve is designed for liquid CO2. You can't cram enough HPA into the valve to get consistent shots at velocities in the 250+ range. My guns will cycle with HPA, just not well.

I'm wondering if modifying the 68 Special power tube to have a steel bar in it, similar to a Pro-Lite setup, vs. the three small holes drilled in it, would allow enough flow to bring velocity to useable range on HPA.

As it stands, I can get 260FPS on gas CO2, and 180FPS on HPA. I haven't made a move to modify my current power tube because I can't find a backup in case it doesn't work, and despite me not using the Special very much, if at all, I still like a wall hanger to be functional if I ever decide to use it.

No issues cycling on HPA at all, even on full auto (modified trigger), I just wish I could get better velocity.

Original power tube, modified, Prolite.
Yes it works.

Looks great! I know what I'll be doing soon.

How is it on HPA?

I got 240 on HPA. Not good enough yet, so there will be more done to the valve.
I switched to 12 gram with a Micro CA II and got 260 to 270, so I used that for a game. Got 20 shots per 12, before it ran down. That's good.

What kind of mods have you done to the valve so far?

If I can get decent velocity out of my Special on HPA, I'll use it a lot more... it's one of my favourite shooters when I can get CO2.

Turned down the back ends to resemble the Prolite style valve poppets and used a lighter spring.
I also cut channels in the sides to allow more gas flow.

Can you find the square tubing with the proper sized square ID? The rear part of the extrusion just holds the feed pawl from what I can see. I'd just find the tubing and weld on a piece of solid stock.
